/ about

Born in Milan in 1993, I studied classical piano at Conservatorio G. Nicolini in Piacenza, but soon as a teenager my curiosity towards different musical instruments was such that I tought myself how to play drums, guitar and singing. I loved many musical genres, though my first fascinations after classical music were Frank Zappa and British progressive music. Speaking about Prog, the meeting with Greg Lake was decisive for my growth, I’ll be forever grateful for all the time spent at the Crimson King’s court. Since then, also thanks to my friend and music producer Max Marchini, I have met and sometimes worked with many well-known musicians that were an invaluable source of inspiration such as Keith & Julie Tippetts, John Greaves, Lino Capra Vaccina, Paolo Tofani, Paul Roland, Peter Hammill, Fred Frith, Daniel Lanois, Markus Stockhausen, The Boxhead Ensemble, Michael Mantler and many more.

2018 (Manticore Records) – A deep journey into the poetry & music of Greg Lake, a labour of love where some of his most beautiful songs are re-arranged by the talented pianist Max Repetti with Annie Barbazza on vocals.

Annie and Max recorded such a wonderful and touching tribute to the music I have made during my lifetime. Max’s arrangements are absolutely superb! Vive

solo

2020 (Dark Companion Records) – My first solo album, an “intimate, courageous, innovative album” in which the many influences and musical styles within me come together, an album that would not have been possible without a little help from my friends. The production is minimal, immediate, the songs are as rough as when they were conceived, avoiding overengineerings. The result is a collections of songs that span over years of work and new musical discoveries.

Earthly Powers

John Greaves & Annie Barbazza

2023 (Dark Companion Records) – Annie and I have been working together for some years now. Her instinctive approach to my songs matches my need to constantly redefine them. We’ve recorded quite a lot of stuff together and I had the pleasure of participating on her fine solo “Vive”album. I’m thrilled to hear her making her own what was once the domain of Dagmar Krause and Lisa Herman. Here’s what we do live, including a few respectful (I hope) covers of the greats. Hope you enjoy it…
John Greaves, July 2023

I’ve dreamed about meeting John since I was introduced to his music. Having then had the opportunity to become friends and make music together through the years has been life changing for me. I admire John so much, I love his poetics and will forever be grateful to him for having painted a little girl’s dreams with vivid colours. This album collects some of our last live performances as a duo, welcome to the show.

Sempre Notte

Michael Mantler with Annie Barbazza, John Greaves & The New Songs Ensemble

2024 (Dark Companion Records) – LIVE SONGS, recorded live at “Porgy & Bess” in Vienna on September 26, 2023 on a special night that marked the celebration of Porgy’s 30 years of activity and Michael Mantler’s 80th birthday.

The recording of that concert is characterized by an almost magical drawing into the material the longer you listen. Similar to a “black hole,” there is no escape while listening. The 17 songs fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and form a stringent overall picture with a dark, atmospheric urgency. A sound-tone-word epic that on the one hand illu- minates the composer’s entire musical spectrum, but on the other also provides many delicate insights into the darker regions of human existence and actions. A magnificent synthesis of the arts that challenges and rewards. An “update” that almost cries out for a sequel!
